Artist Statement
I am a Northern California painter. Although occasionally I paint on site, most of my work is produced at my studios in Sacramento and Carmel California, as well as in my studio near Castellòn, Spain. My works have shown in solo and group exhibitions for over thirty years. They are in the collections of public institutions, corporations, and those of countless private individuals. I am the only child of two well-known California artists. My father, A. Alan Post, was a painter and my mother, Helen Post, was a sculptor. Expressing myself through art has, therefore, always been a central part of my life — indeed, a way of life, as it was theirs.
Most importantly, my parents taught me that felt experiences are at the core of any successful piece of artwork. Thus, for me the painter's emotions about the subject matter and how these feelings are best expressed are more critical than the choice of subject matter itself or than even the artist's technical proficiency or objective accuracy of observation. Painting involves a "transference" of my initial emotions about the subject matter to the artwork itself. Thus a narrative conclusion is never my objective. Instead, the primary functions of composition and color, tone and shapes are to serve the emotional depths of my feelings about the artwork. For those reasons, I strive to vary my subject matter as much as I can depending on my enthusiasm as I begin a work.
With that in mind, admittedly many of my paintings derive from observations during my travels in Spain. My family has had a home there for over 55 years and I have spent considerable time in Spain. In fact, my attachment even preceded our acquisition of the house, as I spent a formative year of study in Madrid without my family at age 17. These experiences have given me a wealth of memories about the place, which, over the years, consciously and unconsciously, have provided a way to explore both what excites me artistically as well as romantically.
Despite the frequent theme, I attempt to avoid approaching each of my painting's composition, color choices, and general structure in a mechanical or preconceived fashion. I struggle to make these choices in an instinctive and imaginative way and remain willing to sacrifice perspective and objective accuracy to remain alert and responsive to my feelings about the specific artwork as I paint. Consequently, I hope that those who respond to my paintings discover a pleasing subjectivity in each.
